Choose Manta Village if
- Anyone in your group gets seasick. The ride is minutes, not most of an hour.
- You are bringing kids or want the shortest possible night.
- You are staying in Keauhou or south Kona.
The trade-off is company. It is the most popular site, so expect other boats around you. Some operators say later departures share the site with fewer boats.
Choose Manta Heaven if
- You are staying north of town or on the Kohala Coast, so Honokōhau is closer.
- Some of your group are certified divers. Several Honokōhau boats take snorkelers and divers together.
- You do not mind a longer ride for a less crowded site.
What about the Kohala Coast?
There is a third area near Waikoloa Village and Kawaihae Harbor. It is less crowded, but sightings are less reliable, with fewer rays and some nights with none. It is only worth it if you are staying up there and accept the risk.
